Translated from Spanish: An oil-on-canvas portrait (130 x 100 cm), c. 1883–88, by Juan Manuel Blanes (1830–1901). The museum notes that portraiture was a constant throughout Blanes’s career and one of his permanent economic mainstays, and that this canvas has characteristics unusual for the artist: Carlota Ferreira — a person closely linked to the painter and his son — appears almost full-length, delimited by effects of light whose intensity concentrates at her waist, sensually accentuating the smoothness of her arms, so that Blanes moves away from the habitual academic centring that took the face as the centre of the work. Held by the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Montevideo (on display, Sala 5).
